Birmingham Man Arrested for Alleged Racial Abuse of Police Officer at City Protest
A man from Birmingham has been arrested on suspicion of racially abusing a police officer during a demonstration in the city centre. The 38-year-old suspect was taken into custody at around 6pm on Thursday, March 19, at a protest on Hospital Street.
Ongoing Investigation into Earlier Incident
The arrest forms part of an ongoing investigation into a separate incident that occurred at another demonstration on Hospital Street on Tuesday, March 10. During that event, a West Midlands Police officer was reportedly subjected to racial abuse.
The suspect was held on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence. He has since been released on bail as inquiries into the matter continue.
Police Clarify Connection to Flag Burning Incident
West Midlands Police have moved to quash rumours that Thursday's arrest was connected to the burning of an Israeli flag at a demonstration on Hospital Street two weeks earlier, on Thursday, March 5. A police spokesman stated clearly that this is not the case.
The investigation into the flag burning continues independently, with authorities liaising with the Crown Prosecution Service regarding that matter.
Background on Previous Flag Burning Arrest
Last week, BirminghamLive reported that one man was arrested and bailed after an Israeli flag was burned during protests outside a city mosque. Police later confirmed that a second man was interviewed under caution and released in connection with the same incident.
This comes after the force faced criticism for its handling of events leading up to the Aston Villa versus Maccabi Tel Aviv Europa League fixture last November. The controversy ultimately led to the departure of then Chief Constable Craig Guildford.

In a comprehensive statement, a spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "We've arrested a man on suspicion of racially abusing one of our police officers at a demonstration in Birmingham. The suspect, aged 38, was arrested at around 6pm at a demonstration on Hospital Street. He was held on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence."
"His arrest was part of an ongoing investigation into an incident at another demonstration on Hospital Street on 10 March, when one of our officers was racially abused. The 38-year-old has since been bailed while the investigation continues."
The statement continued: "We are aware of social media comments suggesting that last night's arrest was connected to the burning of an Israeli flag on 5 March at another demonstration on Hospital Street. That is not the case. The investigation into the flag burning continues, and we are liaising with the Crown Prosecution Service."
