Man Charged After Eight-Hour Standoff Outside HMP Birmingham

A man has been charged with multiple offences following an eight-hour standoff outside HMP Birmingham in which police officers were allegedly assaulted.

Incident Details

Karmell Nwakola, aged 27, of Rotton Park Road, Edgbaston, climbed a brick wall on Lodge Road in Winson Green on Tuesday, April 28. Roads were cordoned off and some residents were unable to return home as police negotiators worked to resolve the situation.

Charges Filed

West Midlands Police confirmed that Nwakola has been charged with assaulting two police officers, causing unnecessary suffering to a police dog, and criminal damage to two police vehicles. He is scheduled to appear before Birmingham Magistrates Court later today, April 29.

Police received the first 999 call at 4:45am, and Nwakola was taken into custody at 1:20am the following day, marking an incident that lasted over eight hours.

Road Closures and Disruption

Bacchus Road and the junction of Lodge Road and Handsworth New Road were sealed off during the incident. Traffic, including bus routes 11 and 101, was diverted, causing significant delays and congestion in the area.

West Midlands Police stated: "Karmell Nwakola has been charged with a number of offences following yesterday's incident. He was remanded in police custody to appear before city magistrates today."
