Major Update in Birmingham City Centre Assault Cases
Detectives have issued a significant development after two women were sexually assaulted and strangled in Birmingham city centre. The incidents occurred within minutes of each other during the early hours of Friday, March 27, prompting a swift police response.
Details of the Attacks
The first assault took place on Church Street, between Colmore Row and Edmund Street, at approximately 12:50 AM. A member of the public assisted the victim to safety, enabling her to contact the authorities. Shortly after, at around 1:00 AM, a CCTV operator observed another woman being attacked on nearby Newhall Street. The perpetrator was disturbed by bystanders and fled the scene.
Charges and Court Appearance
Leonardo Gillin, aged 21, has now been charged with sexual assault and non-fatal strangulation in connection with these events. He is scheduled to appear at Birmingham Magistrates Court today, March 28, as investigations continue. West Midlands Police have urged anyone with information to come forward, quoting log number 126 of March 27 when calling 101.
