A man has tragically died after plunging into floodwater during a police chase in the Midlands, prompting the force to refer itself to the police complaints watchdog. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, February 14, when officers from Derbyshire Constabulary were pursuing a vehicle towing a suspected stolen caravan.

Details of the Police Pursuit

According to police statements, the pursuit began after the vehicle, believed to have been stolen from Oakerthorpe, was spotted. During the chase, the occupants of the vehicle reportedly rammed police cars before coming to a stop near Egginton in south Derbyshire. Two men fled the vehicle, with one being arrested shortly afterward.

The second man entered the flooded Egginton Brook, near the junction of Main Street and Ash Grove Lane. After extensive searches conducted over several hours by police and Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service, the man was recovered from the water. He was treated by ambulance crews at the scene and rushed to Royal Derby Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police Referral to Watchdog

Derbyshire Constabulary has since made a referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to the death occurring after police contact. A spokesperson for the force stated, "As the death happened after police contact, we have referred ourselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct." Formal identification of the deceased man has not yet taken place, and efforts are ongoing to trace his next of kin.

Charges Filed in Connection with the Incident

In related developments, Adrian Osiecki, a 34-year-old from Harnall Lane West in Coventry, has been charged by police. He faces multiple charges, including:

  • Dangerous driving
  • Driving without insurance
  • Driving while disqualified
  • Theft of a caravan

Osiecki is scheduled to appear at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court on Monday, February 16. The case continues to unfold as authorities investigate the full circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
