Officers from the National Crime Agency and West Midlands Police have arrested a man in Birmingham on suspicion of using social media to advertise dangerous people smuggling services.
Dawn raid nets suspect and illegal migrant
The operation took place on the morning of Monday, 22 December 2025, at an address on Holyhead Road in Handsworth. A 29-year-old Indian national was detained on suspicion of facilitating illegal immigration. The arrest is part of a probe into a criminal network believed to be moving people across borders hidden in the backs of lorries.
During the raid, a second male was identified and detained for having no legal right to remain in the United Kingdom. This individual was processed separately and handed over to immigration enforcement officers for further action regarding his status and potential removal from the country.
Devices seized in ongoing network investigation
Following the arrest, investigators seized a number of electronic devices from the property. These are now subject to detailed forensic examination. The goal is to uncover further evidence of the network's activities and identify other individuals involved in the operation.
NCA Branch Commander Kevin Broadhead stated that tackling organised immigration crime is a top priority. He emphasised the agency's determination to use all resources to "target, disrupt, and dismantle" the criminal networks that facilitate illegal entry into the UK. He confirmed the investigation remains active.
National crackdown on digital smuggling platforms
This arrest highlights a broader national effort to combat individuals who exploit digital platforms to promote or enable illegal migration. Regional police forces and national agencies are increasingly collaborating to monitor social media for criminal advertisements and take direct action against those coordinating clandestine entry.
The primary suspect remains in police custody, where he is being questioned by specialised investigators from both the National Crime Agency and West Midlands Police. Authorities are working to determine the full extent of his alleged role within the suspected people smuggling ring.
