A police officer in Wolverhampton feared for his life when a man armed with a kitchen knife charged at him, leading to the suspect being Tasered twice before arrest. Shamal Baiz, 34, appeared at Dudley Magistrates' Court on July 8, where he pleaded guilty to assaulting a police constable and possessing a knife in a public place.
Incident on Allen Road
The incident occurred on June 7 in Allen Road, Wolverhampton, outside a house of multiple occupancy. Officers responded to reports of a man with a blade and found Baiz holding a knife. According to the court, Baiz 'started running towards them' and was Tasered twice before being detained.
Officer's Fear
In a victim personal statement, the officer said: "The male was aggressive, running at me armed with a knife, I was in genuine fear the male was going to stab and attack me." The officer's statement highlighted the danger faced during the confrontation.
Legal Proceedings
Baiz's legal representative noted that he had no previous convictions but was 'facing a custodial sentence' and requested a pre-sentence report. Baiz, of Chadwick Street, Bolton, was released on unconditional bail ahead of a further hearing scheduled for September 14.
