Two passengers engaged in a physical altercation aboard a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from Sylhet, Bangladesh, to London on Thursday, 17 September, with cabin crew eventually intervening to resolve the situation, the airline confirmed.
Video footage captured by a fellow passenger shows a man in a black T-shirt reaching over a seat and throwing punches at another passenger seated in the row behind. The man in the row behind then rises to his feet as the scuffle intensifies, with the taller man's black T-shirt being torn during the confrontation. Screams and shouts from alarmed fellow passengers filled the cabin as several onlookers attempted to pull the men apart.
According to the Mirror, the brawl began as a verbal dispute between two passengers before escalating into a physical fight. One passenger's T-shirt was torn open as the heated confrontation unfolded on the crowded aircraft, before cabin crew finally managed to intervene and bring the situation under control.
Airline confirms incident
Mohiuddin Ahmed, general manager of Biman Bangladesh Airlines' public relations department, confirmed that the fight had indeed taken place. "The flight departed Sylhet for London this morning," he said. "At some point during the flight, two passengers got into a physical altercation. The cabin crew later intervened and resolved the situation between them."
The incident is said to have caused considerable distress amongst other travellers, including children and elderly passengers on board. Video footage filmed inside the cabin subsequently spread across social media platforms.
Aftermath and unanswered questions
The reason behind the initial dispute has not been revealed. It remains unclear whether either of the passengers sustained injuries or faced any consequences following the plane's landing. Nevertheless, the airline's spokesperson confirmed it was a London-bound service that had taken off from Sylhet.
The altercation highlights the challenges cabin crew face in managing passenger behaviour during long-haul flights, with the airline yet to announce any further action regarding the passengers involved.
