Midlands Paedophile Sentenced to 21 Years for Decades of Child Abuse
Paul Wood, a 60-year-old from Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire, has been imprisoned for 21 years after being convicted of 17 sexual offences against three young victims. His abuse, which began in the 1990s, was only reported to police in 2023, leading to his arrest and subsequent trial.
Conviction and Sentencing Details
Wood was found guilty by jurors on multiple counts, including five counts of rape of a girl under 13, ten counts of assault by touching a girl under 13, one count of sexual assault, and one count of attempted rape of a girl under 13. He had denied all charges during the trial.
In addition to the prison sentence, Wood was handed an indefinite sexual harm prevention order by the court. Derbyshire Constabulary confirmed the details of the sentencing, emphasising the severity of the crimes.
Police Response and Victim Support
Detective Constable Natalie Jones, the officer in charge of the case, praised the courage of the victims. "The victims in the case have shown great courage from the outset of this investigation," she said. "I’d like to thank them for coming forward and reporting Wood’s abuse."
She highlighted the challenges victims face in disclosing abuse, noting that many keep it secret for years before feeling able to report it. "This case is testament to the fact that no matter when sexual abuse happened, we will investigate it and seek justice," Jones added.
Impact on Victims and Community
DC Jones expressed hope that the three young women involved can now begin to move forward with their lives, knowing that Wood has been held publicly accountable. "Wood is a dangerous paedophile who belongs behind bars," she stated, underscoring the importance of the verdict for community safety.
The case serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to address historical sexual offences and support victims in coming forward, regardless of the time elapsed since the abuse occurred.
