A police officer shot in the foot during an early-morning incident in Nottingham city centre has undergone several operations and remains in hospital, according to details revealed in court on Friday (October 23).
Court Hearing Details
Aisha Zaman, 27, appeared before magistrates charged with two firearm offences following the shooting of PC Lee Lane. Prosecutor Mairin Long told the court the firearm fell to the floor and went off after the officer arrived at the scene on Angel Row at around 4.50am on Sunday.
Zaman, of Collison Street in the Hyson Green area of Nottingham, has been charged with possession of a prohibited firearm, namely an adapted shotgun, and possession of that firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence. PC Lane remains in hospital in a stable condition.
Incident Details
Images from the aftermath appeared to show a sawn-off double-barrelled shotgun lying on the pavement in the city centre. The officer had approached two people waiting at a bus stop on the busy street when the gun was discharged.
Zaman confirmed her name, date of birth and address in court on Friday, as her parents and younger sister sat in the public gallery. Mrs Simpson, the chair of the magistrates bench, remanded Zaman in custody.
Case Sent to Crown Court
The case has now been sent to Nottingham Crown Court, where a plea and trial management hearing will take place. Defence solicitor Omar Banares told the hearing: "Of course this incident is serious; it has made national news. She does not face any charge in relation to the discharge of the firearm or injuring the officer. She lives at home with her father and mother who are in the public gallery along with her younger sister."
Other Arrests
Alongside Zaman, multiple other suspects have been held in connection with the incident, including two men, aged 24 and 30, and two women, aged 25 and 21, all arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. A 35-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman were also arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and assisting an offender and remain in police custody, the force said on Thursday evening.
