A man has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and assaulting an emergency worker after a female police officer was reportedly punched in the throat in the Black Country.
Early Morning Crash Leads to Assault
The incident unfolded in the early hours of New Year's Day, Thursday 1 January. Police were called to Robert Street in Lower Gornal, Dudley, at around 5.30am following reports that a Ford Ranger had crashed into a wall.
Upon arrival, officers found a man walking away from the scene. As a female officer attempted to prevent him from entering a nearby Range Rover, which was being driven by a second person, the man punched her in the throat.
Swift Police Operation Across Counties
The Range Rover was then driven away from the area. A rapid police response, involving traffic officers and the drones unit, tracked the vehicle to the Swindon area of Staffordshire.
At approximately 7.30am, a 46-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and drink-driving. A 48-year-old woman was also arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. The Range Rover was recovered.
Officer Not Seriously Injured
A spokesperson for West Midlands Police confirmed that the officer involved was thankfully not seriously injured during the ordeal.
Both suspects remain in police custody for questioning. The force reiterated its commitment to protecting officers who work tirelessly to keep the public safe, especially during holiday periods.
