West Midlands Police seized 104 vehicles and made 12 arrests during a week-long special operation targeting uninsured drivers and other road traffic offences across Birmingham. The operation, which ran from June 5 to June 11, involved officers from the force's traffic unit working alongside the DVLA and local neighbourhood teams.
Targeted enforcement on uninsured vehicles
According to West Midlands Police, the operation aimed to reduce the number of uninsured vehicles on the road, which often are involved in other criminal activities. Officers used automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology to identify suspect vehicles. In addition to the seizures, 56 fixed penalty notices were issued for offences including driving without due care and attention, using a mobile phone while driving, and not wearing a seatbelt.
Impact on community safety
Sergeant Mark Watson from the Roads Policing Unit said: “Taking these vehicles off the road makes our communities safer. Uninsured drivers are more likely to be involved in collisions and other crimes. This operation sends a clear message that we will not tolerate dangerous or illegal driving.” The force also reported that several of the seized vehicles were linked to other crimes, including drug dealing and burglary.

Local residents have praised the operation, with many calling for similar crackdowns in their areas. West Midlands Police plan to continue such operations throughout the year, focusing on high-risk areas. The DVLA confirmed that all seized vehicles would be checked for outstanding fines and penalties. Owners who fail to provide valid insurance or documentation risk having their vehicles crushed or sold at auction.
