Staffordshire Police Decline to Release Digital Speed Camera Data
Staffordshire Police have refused to disclose information regarding the number of drivers caught by their advanced digital speed cameras, rejecting a Freedom of Information request from BirminghamLive. This decision marks a significant shift from previous practices, as the force had previously released data indicating approximately 1,200 motorists were caught in the first half of the previous year.
Safety Concerns Cited as Justification
The police force argued that releasing the figures could potentially lead to increased speeding and undermine road safety efforts. They invoked health and safety exemptions to justify withholding the information, stating that disclosure might encourage motorists to disregard speed limits and put lives at risk.
Advanced Technology and Locations
The digital cameras, installed two years ago on major roads, are among the most advanced in the country. They utilize radar technology to measure vehicle speeds without relying on traditional road markings. Key locations include the A449 in Stafford and three sites in Stoke-on-Trent.
Impact on Public Transparency
This refusal raises questions about transparency and public access to data on law enforcement activities. While the police emphasize safety, the lack of disclosure contrasts with earlier openness, leaving the public without updated insights into speeding offences in the region.
