Police seize £1.5m monkey dust from van in Longton

Police in Staffordshire have intercepted a massive consignment of the synthetic drug known as monkey dust, with an estimated street value of £1.5 million.

Major Bust Following Intelligence Lead

The significant find was made by officers from Staffordshire Police's major and organised crime department. Acting on intelligence, they executed a warrant on Thursday, December 17.

The target was a van parked on a residential street off Weston Coyney Road in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, close to the junction with the A520 Weston Road. A search of the vehicle revealed approximately 25 kilograms of a synthetic cathinone, a Class B drug commonly referred to as monkey dust.

A Force Priority in the Fight Against Drugs

Superintendent Phil Bryan, who leads the force's dedicated Operation Rivent targeting monkey dust, emphasised the importance of the seizure. He stated that tackling the supply of this substance remains a force priority.

"We are determined to take robust action against anyone found to be involved in the supply of monkey dust in Staffordshire," said Supt Bryan. "While we also [focus on] helping the often vulnerable users of this substance to receive appropriate support from partners and the wider community."

Ongoing Crackdown on Illegal Substances

The police described the operation as proactive work, part of their continued crackdown on the supply of illegal drugs across the county. The van was believed to be directly linked to the distribution network for the drug.

Authorities are urging the public to come forward with any information related to monkey dust. People can contact Staffordshire Police by calling 101. Alternatively, information can be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
