West Midlands Police negotiators are engaged in a 12-hour stand-off with a man who has barricaded himself inside a property in Aston, Birmingham. The force has expressed concerns for the man's welfare, as he has been inside the maisonette on Westwood Road since just before midnight on Wednesday, July 8.
Armed Officers and Negotiators at Scene
Armed officers are also in attendance at the scene. Police have stated that they understand there is no one else inside the property, dispelling earlier speculation on social media of a hostage situation. Force negotiators are actively speaking with the man in an effort to resolve the situation peacefully.
A police spokesperson told BirminghamLive: "We’re currently at Westwood Road, Perry Barr, where a man has barricaded himself inside a property and we have concerns for his welfare. The man in his 20s has been at the maisonette since just before midnight and force negotiators are speaking with him. Armed officers are also in attendance, although we understand there is no one else in the maisonette and we are working to resolve this situation with our priority being the safety of the man involved."
Emergency Services Response
West Midlands Ambulance Service was also called to the scene, describing it as a "police incident at a private address." The area around Westwood Road and Tame Road has been cordoned off, with police vehicles and ambulances visible at the location.
Ongoing Negotiations
As of late morning, the stand-off had lasted approximately 12 hours. Police have not provided further details about the man's identity or the circumstances leading to the barricade. The priority remains the safe resolution of the incident, with negotiators continuing their efforts to establish communication.
