A dangerous sexual predator who targeted a teenage girl as she waited alone for a train has been jailed for 12 months following a disturbing incident at Cosham Railway Station.
Disturbing Attack on Young Commuter
Barnaby Money, 46, approached the 17-year-old victim as she sat on a station bench at approximately 6.20pm on February 25 last year. The vulnerable teenager was waiting for her train when the predator initiated contact, initially asking questions about train services before escalating his behaviour in a terrifying manner.
Escalation of Predatory Behaviour
Despite the girl's attempts to ignore him, Money moved closer and made explicit sexual propositions, asking if she wanted to go for a walk and perform sexual acts. The situation deteriorated rapidly when he attempted to kiss her hand before proceeding to sexually assault her while they remained on the bench.
In a particularly chilling development, Money then threatened to rape the terrified teenager, maintaining his position beside her on the station bench as he issued these menacing statements. The entire distressing episode unfolded in a public railway station environment where commuters would normally expect to feel safe.
Swift Police Response and Arrest
The attack was witnessed by a concerned member of the public who immediately contacted the authorities. Hampshire Police officers responded promptly to the scene, where the witness identified Money who remained seated next to his victim. The predator was arrested at the station and taken into custody for questioning without delay.
Court Sentencing and Restrictions
Money, of East Hill Road in Ryde, pleaded guilty to sexual assault charges and was sentenced at Portsmouth Crown Court on January 15. The 12-month prison term was accompanied by additional restrictions designed to protect the public from future harm.
The court imposed a 10-year requirement for Money to register as a sex offender and issued a prohibition against working with children. These measures reflect the serious nature of the offences and the recognised danger the perpetrator poses to vulnerable individuals.
Police Commentary on the Case
Detective Constable Phil James from British Transport Police emphasised the predatory nature of the attack, stating: "Money is a dangerous sexual predator who preyed on a lone teenage girl and attacked her as she waited for a train. His behaviour was totally unacceptable and has caused a young woman severe trauma."
The detective commended both the victim's bravery in supporting the investigation and the bystander's quick thinking in alerting authorities. "Thanks to them, Money is now behind bars and no longer a danger to women," DC James confirmed.
Reporting Sexual Offences on Railways
British Transport Police have reiterated their commitment to tackling sexual offences on the rail network, urging victims and witnesses to report incidents by texting 61016. "We take all reports seriously, and just like in this incident, officers will immediately attend to arrest sexual offenders and bring them to justice," DC James affirmed.
The case highlights the importance of public vigilance and prompt reporting in preventing sexual predators from operating on public transport networks. Railway stations, while public spaces, can present vulnerable situations that predators may seek to exploit, making community awareness and police responsiveness crucial elements in passenger safety.
