Former Prison Officer Admits Misconduct Over Secret Inmate Relationship

A former prison officer has pleaded guilty to misconduct in a public office after engaging in a secret relationship with an inmate using a banned mobile phone. Jade Morris, aged 27 and from Herefordshire, admitted the charges at Birmingham Crown Court on Wednesday, March 25, 2026.

Details of the Case and Guilty Pleas

Morris confessed to misconduct in a public office and encouraging prisoner Jerome Nunes to use a prohibited device. Nunes, 35, had previously pleaded guilty to two offences under the Prison Act 1952 for possessing and using an unauthorised mobile phone at Birmingham Magistrates' Court on February 10.

The Crown Prosecution Service revealed that the relationship was uncovered in October 2022 when a phone was recovered after being thrown from a prison window. Evidence indicated sustained contact between Nunes and Morris from July 2022 to January 2023.

Prosecution's Statement on Breach of Trust

Georgina Davies, from the CPS, emphasized the seriousness of the breach. "Prison officers hold positions of significant trust and responsibility," she said. "The public are entitled to expect those working within the prison system will act with integrity and always maintain clear professional boundaries."

Davies added that this case involved a sustained and deliberate violation of that trust. Morris knowingly engaged in a prolonged relationship with Nunes, facilitating his criminal activity and compromising prison security.

Impact and Message of the Case

The Crown Prosecution Service collaborated closely with police to build a robust case, leading both defendants to plead guilty. Davies stated, "We hope this case sends a clear message that those who abuse positions of public trust will be held to account."

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about security and professionalism within correctional facilities, underscoring the critical need for adherence to ethical standards by public officials.
