Reckless Driver Jailed for Over a Decade After Fatal Smethwick Collision

A reckless driver who lost control of a Mercedes and killed a beloved Smethwick mother has been sentenced to ten and a half years in prison. Erjon Aliaj, 35, was behind the wheel of the vehicle that struck carer Baljit Kaur, 62, as she was being dropped off at her home on Thimblemill Road.

Tragic Incident on Residential Street

The fatal collision occurred on August 28 last year when Aliaj approached a bend at high speed. He lost control of the white Mercedes, which mounted the kerb and collided with four parked cars. One of those vehicles was the car Baljit Kaur was exiting onto the pavement.

Despite immediate medical attention from paramedics, the devoted carer was pronounced dead at the scene. Aliaj was arrested at the location and subsequently charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Court Sentencing and Police Statement

At Wolverhampton Crown Court on Monday, March 2, Aliaj, who has no fixed address, received his substantial prison sentence. Following the sentencing, Detective Sergeant Julie Lyman from the West Midlands Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit emphasized the gravity of the incident.

"Aliaj was driving dangerously and at speed," stated Det Sgt Lyman. "He lost control of the vehicle and killed an innocent woman as a result of his reckless actions."

Family Tribute to a Hardworking Carer

In an emotional tribute, Baljit Kaur's son described his mother as his strength, rock, and whole world. He highlighted her decades of service as a carer, noting she had worked in the profession for 22 years.

"She worked hard her entire life. Even on the day she was killed, she was coming home from work," he said. "For the last 22 years, she worked as a carer – looking after everyone, her clients, her friends and especially me. Her death was a huge loss to me, our family and the whole community."

The case underscores the devastating consequences of dangerous driving, leaving a family and community in mourning while holding the responsible party accountable through the justice system.
