Human remains found in Midlands identified as woman missing for 19 years
Remains found in Midlands are woman missing since 2006

Human remains discovered in the Midlands have been formally identified as those of a woman who vanished nearly two decades ago, Leicestershire Police have confirmed.

A Decades-Long Mystery

Malgorzata Wnuczek, a 27-year-old Polish national living in Leicester, was reported missing on 31 May 2006. Known as Gosia to her family, she was last seen boarding a bus from her workplace at Peter Jackson Logistics, heading towards the city centre. The final contact with her relatives was a text message sent two days before her disappearance.

The Discovery and Investigation

Following information supplied by Polish authorities in June 2023, police conducted searches along the River Soar between Mill Lane and Upperton Road bridges. Later, in October of this year, human remains were found in scrubland off Great Central Way, near Watkin Road. Forensic testing has now confirmed the identity as that of Ms Wnuczek.

As part of the ongoing inquiry, a 39-year-old man was arrested in the Greater Manchester area on suspicion of assisting an offender and perverting the course of justice. He has since been released with no further action. Police are preparing a file for the coroner.

An Open Case and a Family's Grief

Detective Superintendent Jenni Greenway expressed her deepest condolences to Malgorzata's family. She stated: "While this news has ended almost 20 years of uncertainty and not knowing where Malgorzata is, I know it won't provide closure or end their ongoing grief."

She emphasised that the investigation into Ms Wnuczek's death remains very much open and ongoing. Police continue to liaise with colleagues in Poland and have renewed an appeal for information. "It's never too late to help," Det Supt Greenway added, urging anyone with knowledge of the case to come forward.
