Birmingham is home to an immersive safety village where children learn to navigate everyday risks, from road crossings to house fires. Safeside, operated by West Midlands Fire Service, offers youngsters a lifelike environment to build crucial life skills.
The Nechells-based centre features a road crossing, a shop, a double-decker bus, a canal waterway, a house fire scenario, a police station and a court room. Children engage with scenarios covering road, water, fire, electrical and personal safety, gaining practical knowledge in a controlled setting.
Interactive learning for young pupils
Year 5 pupils from Lift Four Dwellings Primary in Quinton recently visited Safeside, taking part in interactive scenarios on road, fire and water safety, making emergency calls, and staying safe at home and in the community. The visit aimed to encourage pupils to think carefully about their responses to different challenges and how their actions can keep themselves and others safe.
The experience also supported wider learning around independence, responsibility and making informed decisions. Following a series of devastating fires across the West Midlands, the timing of such education is particularly pertinent, according to the fire service.
Realistic environments build confidence
A spokesman for Safeside said: "Safeside is an immersive, full-scale, interactive safety village operated by West Midlands Fire Service. It equips children, young people, and vulnerable groups with the knowledge, confidence, and life skills to stay safe."
"The children are encouraged to think for themselves, learn about the possible consequences of actions, and build the confidence to make Smart Choices in different life situations. These settings provide unique visual, auditory, discussion-based, and physical learning opportunities. By simulating real-world risk in a safe environment, learners develop stronger understanding, retention, and decision-making skills."
School praises safety education visit
Jaime Bryan, Head of School at Lift Four Dwellings Primary, said: "Safeside gives our pupils the opportunity to experience situations they may one day face in real life, helping them understand how to respond safely and make good decisions. The interactive activities brought important messages to life, and we were very proud of the maturity, curiosity and excellent behaviour our pupils showed throughout the visit. We are also grateful to West Midlands Fire Service for making the experience possible."
The visit forms part of Safeside's broader mission to equip young people with the skills to handle emergencies and everyday challenges, reinforcing the importance of safety education across the region.
