Seven Men Sentenced in Major UK Cocaine Trafficking Operation
Seven individuals have been handed substantial prison sentences for their involvement in a multi-million-pound cocaine conspiracy that spanned across the United Kingdom. The criminal network was dismantled after a decisive intervention by the Regional Organised Crime Unit, which led to the seizure of a massive quantity of drugs and the arrest of key figures.
Police Interception Leads to Major Bust
The operation reached its climax when officers from the Regional Organised Crime Unit stopped a vehicle in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire. Inside the car, they discovered James Garlick, 30, and Shane Wintle, 32, along with 52 kilogrammes of cocaine. The seized drugs had an estimated street value ranging between £6,246,240 and £7,807,800, highlighting the scale of the illicit enterprise.
Extensive Drug Distribution Network Uncovered
Investigations revealed that Garlick and Wintle orchestrated a sophisticated distribution network, utilizing encrypted communication applications on their mobile phones to coordinate the supply of more than 350 kilogrammes of cocaine between May 20 and June 19, 2025. Their operation involved a team of couriers who transported the drugs throughout various regions of the UK, facilitating widespread distribution.
Arrests and Sentencing Details
All seven men were arrested on October 15 of the previous year and subsequently charged. They appeared at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Monday, April 20, where they pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply cocaine. The court handed down the following sentences:
- James Garlick and Shane Wintle, both currently held at HMP Dovegate, received sentences of nine years and seven months each.
- Julian Buggs, 57, with no fixed address, was jailed for nine years and five months.
- Harry Upton, 30, from Buxton, Derbyshire, was sentenced to nine years in prison.
- Sam Upton, 28, from Full Sutton, York, received eight years and two months.
- David Rowley, 60, from Church Lawton, Cheshire, was handed a sentence of eight years and three months.
- Andrew Rushton, 46, from Ashbourne, Derbyshire, was jailed for seven years and eight months.

Following the sentencing, Superintendent Victoria Downing of Staffordshire Police's major and organised crime unit emphasized the significance of the case. She stated, "This group worked together to operate a multi-million-pound crime business across the UK and have been rightfully brought to justice for their actions." She further highlighted the detrimental impact of such criminal activities, noting that serious and organised crime often exploits vulnerable individuals, with perpetrators profiting from addiction and hardship.
Superintendent Downing reassured local communities, saying, "I want to assure communities in Staffordshire that specialist officers are working night and day to take robust action against the organised crime groups operating locally." This statement underscores the ongoing commitment of law enforcement to combat drug trafficking and protect public safety.
