Shoplifter Jailed for 24 Weeks After £250 Bentley Bridge Theft Spree

Luke Dhear, a 36-year-old man described as a repeat offender, has been sentenced to 24 weeks in prison following a shoplifting spree at Bentley Bridge retail park in Wolverhampton. The incident, which involved stolen goods worth approximately £250, led to his arrest and subsequent conviction at Wolverhampton Magistrates' Court on March 12.

Police Investigation and Arrest

Two local neighbourhood officers were patrolling the Wolverhampton retail park when they received reports of a suspicious man believed to be taking items from shop shelves. Security staff directed the officers towards Rookery Street, where they located a man matching the suspect's description.

Upon detaining the individual, a large red bag was recovered, containing items stolen from at least two shops at Bentley Bridge. The total value of the stolen goods was estimated at around £250, highlighting the impact of retail crime on local businesses.

Charges and Court Proceedings

Dhear was charged with 10 counts of theft, including six thefts from a single store in Wednesfield. It was also revealed during the court proceedings that he was on recall to prison for previous offences, underscoring his status as a habitual offender.

At Wolverhampton Magistrates' Court, he was handed a 24-week jail term, reflecting the seriousness of his actions and the need to address repeat offending in the community.

Police Response and Community Impact

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police emphasized the department's commitment to tackling retail crime, stating: "The Wolverhampton police teams know that shop thefts impact the stores and staff who serve our communities, and we are committed to tackling retail crime with four business crime officers along with two police community support officers in Wolverhampton."

The spokesperson added that their primary focus is to investigate retail crimes and target repeat offenders, working closely with retailers and partners to enhance community safety. Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activity by calling 101 or using the Live Chat option on the police website, with 999 reserved for emergencies.

This case serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat retail theft and protect local businesses from the financial and operational disruptions caused by such crimes.
