Six teenagers have been arrested following a racially aggravated assault on a pensioner and four other individuals at Willenhall Memorial Park. The incident, which occurred at approximately 6pm on Sunday, May 24, has prompted a thorough investigation by West Midlands Police.
Victim Details
The victim, a 72-year-old man, sustained serious injuries to his face and arm during the attack. He was rushed to hospital for treatment but has since been discharged and is recovering at home.
Police Response
Supt Gareth Mason expressed the seriousness of the incident, stating: "We understand the concern this has caused in the community. Any form of hate crime will not be tolerated, and we take every report extremely seriously." He added that detectives are keeping the victim and his family informed and are providing support throughout the investigation.
Neighbourhood officers have increased patrols in the area and are engaging with community leaders and local partners to address concerns and provide reassurance.
Arrests Made
Following further enquiries, six teenage males, aged between 16 and 18, have been arrested. They remain in custody for questioning. The force spokesperson confirmed that the assault is being treated as racially aggravated, and officers are reviewing CCTV footage and speaking to witnesses.
