Smethwick rapist jailed six years for park rape

Islamuddin Talash, a 43-year-old from Smethwick, has been sentenced to six years in prison for raping a vulnerable 20-year-old man in a Leicester park. The attack occurred on October 9, 2023, at Abbey Park, where Talash approached the victim sitting on a bench and engaged him in conversation about bicycles.

How the attack unfolded

Talash told the victim he had a bicycle he was willing to give him and suggested they go to his flat to see it. However, as they walked through the park, Talash led the man into a bush and raped him. Prior to the incident, two teenage boys had become suspicious of Talash's behaviour and captured footage and an image of him on their phones.

Teenagers' crucial intervention

The teenagers decided to keep an eye on the pair and approached the bushes. As they did so, Talash ran away, and the teens were able to help the victim. Leicestershire Police stated that the picture taken by the teenagers proved 'crucial' to the investigation, as an officer used it to identify Talash. He was found in the park, arrested, and charged within hours.

Conviction and sentence

Following a trial at Leicester Crown Court last month, Talash, of Westfield Road in Smethwick, was found guilty of rape. During a hearing on Wednesday, July 15, he was jailed for six years and placed on the sex offender register indefinitely.

Police commend witnesses

Detective Sergeant Sarah Jones, from Leicestershire Police, said: “The actions of the witnesses on that day were crucial in this investigation, they did absolutely the right thing by acting on their suspicions. They, along with the victim, deserve enormous credit for giving an account in court that led to today’s outcome. The two boys were able to provide an image and footage which assisted officers in getting a positive identification. An officer who was working within our team took it on herself to do a walk-through the park and immediately spotted a man and recalled his similarities to the man in the image provided by the witnesses. He was arrested straight away and charged within hours. This outcome is a testament to the great work that went into the investigation and the strength of evidence secured this result. The victim was vulnerable, and the defendant used this for his own sexual gratification. We hope that this case reassures the local community and helps the victim put the events of that afternoon behind him.”
