Tamworth Man Arrested for Drug-Driving and Dealing After Canal Chase

A 26-year-old man from Tamworth has been arrested on suspicion of drug-driving and dealing Class A drugs following a dramatic police chase along a canalside towpath. The incident unfolded on Tuesday, March 10, after Staffordshire Police officers spotted a grey Vauxhall Zafira acting suspiciously in the area.

Suspicious Vehicle Leads to Foot Pursuit

At approximately 1:45 PM, police observed the grey Vauxhall Zafira and deemed its behavior suspicious. Officers followed the vehicle as it returned to the driver's home address. Upon realizing he was being tracked, the driver attempted to flee the scene, prompting a foot pursuit by police.

The chase culminated on the towpath next to the Coventry Canal, near Dunstall Lane in Tamworth, where the suspect was apprehended. Both the man and his vehicle were subsequently searched, leading to significant discoveries.

Drugs, Cash, and Weapons Seized in Raid

During the search, police found Class A drugs and a substantial amount of cash in the vehicle. The suspect also tested positive on a drug swipe, indicating impairment. In a follow-up operation, officers conducted a search of the man's property, where they uncovered weapons and drug paraphernalia.

The 26-year-old was arrested on charges of possession with intent to supply Class A drugs and driving whilst unfit through drugs. He has since been released on bail pending further investigation, according to Staffordshire Police.

Police Statement on the Incident

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police provided details on the arrest: "On Tuesday 10th March at around 1.45pm officers spotted a grey Vauxhall Zafira acting suspiciously and followed this vehicle as it drove back to the driver's address. The male driver initially tried to flee from officers but after a short foot pursuit was detained on the Coventry Canal near to Dunstall Lane."

The spokesperson added, "Both the male and the vehicle were subsequently searched and class A drugs and a large amount of cash were found. The male was also drug swiped and tested positive. A search of the male's property was also conducted wherein drugs paraphernalia and weapons were found."

This arrest highlights ongoing efforts by local authorities to combat drug-related crimes in the Tamworth area, with police urging residents to report any suspicious activities to help maintain community safety.
