Teenager Sentenced to Over Three Years for Deliberate Arson Attacks
A 19-year-old man from Stoke-on-Trent has been sentenced to three years and four months in a young offenders institution after he deliberately set fires to a house and bins, then pretended to be a good Samaritan at the scene.
Deceptive Actions Put Lives at Risk
Scott Shaw, 19, of Longton in Stoke-on-Trent, admitted to charges of arson and arson with recklessness as to whether life was endangered. The incidents occurred in August last year, with Shaw first setting fire to bins on Albert Street in Stoke-on-Trent.
After starting the blaze, Shaw knocked on a nearby house door and asked the occupant to call the fire service, claiming he had witnessed three offenders starting the fire and had chased them away. In reality, Shaw himself was responsible for the arson attack.
Second Fire Causes Injuries
In a separate incident that same week, firefighters were called to a house fire on Plant Street in Longton where one man suffered minor burn injuries. CCTV footage captured the fire being started, and investigators quickly identified Shaw as the suspect.
Firefighters at the scene reported having recently spoken to Shaw nearby before the blaze was discovered. When arrested and interviewed by police, Shaw admitted to starting both fires but claimed he did not know why he had committed the acts.
Court Sentencing and Official Statements
Shaw was sentenced at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Tuesday, March 10. Detective Constable Andrew Percy of Staffordshire Police stated: "Shaw put multiple people at risk of serious harm by setting two deliberate fires in one week last year. He showed no regard for the consequences of his actions, but I hope this sentence shows that we will take robust action against those who set fires in Stoke-on-Trent and wider Staffordshire."
Watch Manager Gareth Lewis from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service added: "Thankfully, the fire had not affected the gas pipe connecting the garage to a house, otherwise the fire would have been catastrophic. These deliberate fires took place at a time when we were experiencing increased demand across Staffordshire due to the warm weather, so took valuable resources away from other incidents. I am glad that Shaw has been jailed for his reckless actions."
Police Response and Investigation Details
A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police confirmed the sentencing and provided additional details about the investigation. Officers attended the Albert Street incident alongside colleagues from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, where the fire was extinguished without reported injuries.
The investigation revealed Shaw's deceptive behavior, where he remained at the scene of the first fire and told neighbors he had witnessed the arson and chased away the supposed offenders. The CCTV evidence from the Plant Street incident proved crucial in securing his conviction.
The case highlights the serious consequences of arson and the importance of fire safety in residential areas, particularly during periods of increased demand for emergency services.
