Teenager Sentenced to Prison for Broad Daylight Street Stabbing
A 19-year-old man has been jailed for stabbing another man in a busy Stafford street during the run-up to Christmas, an incident witnessed by numerous horrified onlookers.
Matthew Shelton, 19, from Stafford, was out carrying a knife on Marston Road in Stafford on Saturday, December 13. He approached a man in his 40s whom he knew, leading to a physical altercation.
Violent Confrontation and Hospitalization
During the tussle, Shelton produced the knife and stabbed the victim, causing injuries that required hospital treatment. Staffordshire Police responded swiftly, seizing the weapon and arresting Shelton at the scene.
He was quickly identified as the prime suspect, with compelling evidence gathered against him. This led Shelton to plead guilty to section 18 wounding with intent and possessing a knife in a public place.
Court Sentencing and Police Statement
At Stafford Crown Court on Tuesday, March 24, Shelton was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison. Detective Constable Hayley Taylor from Staffordshire Police's Criminal Investigations Department commented on the case.
"Shelton inflicted harm on the victim in this case and chose to use violence, which we cannot stand for," said DC Taylor. "This incident in particular was seen by lots of people who would have no doubt worried about why and how a man was stabbed in the street in broad daylight."
She added, "I'm happy we've been able to build the evidence needed to secure the conviction."
