Three Teenagers Found Guilty in Fatal Beach Assault Case

Three teenagers have been convicted of manslaughter following a brutal attack on a 49-year-old man they lured to a beach on the Isle of Sheppey. The assault, which occurred in Leysdown-on-Sea, Kent on August 10, 2025, resulted in the death of Alexander Cashford after he was repeatedly struck with rocks and a bottle while being called a paedophile.

Court Proceedings and Verdict Details

At Woolwich Crown Court, a 16-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy were found guilty of manslaughter on Monday, February 16. Another 16-year-old male had previously pleaded guilty to a secondary charge of manslaughter. All three defendants were acquitted of murder charges after standing trial for the killing of Mr Cashford.

The court heard how the victim had given his phone number to the 16-year-old girl after meeting her at an amusement arcade on August 8. Using the fake name Sienna, the trio exchanged messages with Mr Cashford before arranging a meeting by the sea.

Details of the Violent Attack

During the confrontation, Mr Cashford was chased and attacked with rocks and a bottle. Footage of the assault recorded by the teenagers showed one of the male defendants striking the victim on the head with a bottle. The older male defendant claimed he attacked Mr Cashford because he believed police "wouldn't have done anything" if they had reported their concerns.

In his evidence, the teenager admitted wanting to hurt Mr Cashford but claimed he didn't believe it would cause "serious injury." The recording captured the two male defendants chasing the fleeing victim while the girl screamed obscenities and repeatedly called him a paedophile.

Medical Evidence and Cause of Death

Forensic pathologist Dr Anna Biddlestone conducted the post-mortem examination and revealed Mr Cashford sustained more than 30 external injuries including bruises, grazes and cuts. He suffered facial and head injuries, bruises on his limbs and body, and multiple fractured ribs that punctured his lung.

Dr Biddlestone testified that at least 500ml of blood was found in Mr Cashford's left chest cavity. She noted injuries in "protected sites" - areas unlikely to be injured in a fall - including his neck and bones near his eyes. While Mr Cashford had pre-existing heart conditions including a previous heart attack and stent, the pathologist concluded chest injuries from the assault were the most likely cause of death.

Witness Accounts and Judicial Summary

One eyewitness described a rock thrown at Mr Cashford as "the size of a cereal bowl" after the victim fell during the attack. Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb referenced this account in her summing up on Wednesday. The court heard how Mr Cashford was found lying in the mud following the sustained assault.

Dr Biddlestone emphasized that while ribs can fracture during resuscitation attempts, having all fractures on one side was "extremely uncommon" and more likely resulted from "inflicted trauma" during the assault. The combination of severe chest injuries and pre-existing heart conditions ultimately proved fatal for the 49-year-old victim.
