TikTok Lawyer Akhmed Yakoob Denies Racial Abuse Allegations After Arrest

Controversial TikTok lawyer Akhmed Yakoob has protested his innocence after he was arrested on suspicion of racially abusing a West Midlands Police officer. The incident occurred during a protest on the outskirts of Birmingham city centre, where Mr Yakoob was detained on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence.

Arrest Details and Social Media Response

The 38-year-old lawyer was filmed being detained in the back of a police van on Thursday evening, March 19, while protesting outside the Imam Reza Cultural Centre on Hospital Street in Newtown, Birmingham. He was released on bail and has since taken to his social media platform to assert his innocence.

In a video posted online, flanked by his friend Shakeel Afsar, Mr Yakoob stated, "Racially and religiously aggravated public order offence against a police officer, that's what I was arrested for and I will of course do my own enquiries and investigation into this and the West Midlands Police will see that I am innocent." He added, "I have not ever racially or religiously abused anyone and I am against this—whoever made these slurs I condemn them." He concluded with his trademark phrase, "Remember that."

Police Statement and Clarification

West Midlands Police issued a statement on Friday, confirming the arrest. They said, "Last night we arrested a man on suspicion of racially abusing one of our police officers at a demonstration in Birmingham on 10 March. The suspect, aged 38, was arrested at around 6pm yesterday on Hospital Street, Birmingham. He was held on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence." The 38-year-old has since been bailed while the investigation continues.

The police also addressed social media speculation, clarifying that the arrest was not connected to the burning of an Israeli flag on March 5 at another demonstration on Hospital Street. They stated, "That is not the case. The investigation into the flag burning continues, and we are liaising with the Crown Prosecution Service." The force emphasized their commitment to ensuring safety and enforcing the law, saying, "We respect people’s right to protest and express views, without intimidating individuals, communities or breaking the law. We are committed to ensuring the West Midlands is a safe place for everyone to live, work and visit. We will keep communities safe, deter intimidation, and enforce the law."

This incident highlights ongoing tensions in Birmingham related to protests and law enforcement, with Mr Yakoob's case drawing significant attention due to his social media presence and controversial public profile.
