Two men died after falling approximately 15 to 22 feet when a wooden handrail collapsed on a hotel balcony in Lanzarote, an inquest has heard. The incident occurred at around 1.30am on an October night in 2025 at the Galeon Playa Apartments in the resort town of Costa Teguise.
Victims Identified
Darren Silcox, 56, a shopkeeper and father of two from Cwmbran, and Nicholas Thomas, 54, also from Cwmbran, were returning from a night out when the balcony handrail gave way. Both men fell into an atrium stairwell. Mr. Silcox died two hours later at the scene from traumatic brain injury, skull fractures, and skull lacerations, according to an earlier inquest into his death.
Mr. Thomas, a shop manager and family friend of Mr. Silcox, survived the initial fall and was taken to Doctor Jose Molina Orosa Hospital on the island for treatment. He was later flown back to the United Kingdom at the end of November and was transferred to University Hospital Llandough in Wales. However, he died nearly ten months later on July 10, 2026.
Investigation Underway
Spain's Civil Guard has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deadly balcony collapse. The focus of the police inquiry is whether poor maintenance or inadequate safety measures contributed to the accident. Emergency services arrived promptly after the fall, but despite their efforts, Mr. Silcox succumbed to his injuries.
Opening an inquest into Mr. Thomas's death, Gwent coroner Rose Farmer confirmed that the fall was caused by a wooden bannister collapsing. She adjourned the proceedings until April 14, when a joint inquest for both men is expected to be held.
