Two Men Sentenced for Violent Pub Attack in Birmingham's Erdington

A violent attacker has been jailed after glassing a man who tried to stop him arguing with a woman outside a pub in Birmingham. Another man joined in the assault, leading to a significant police investigation and subsequent sentencing at Birmingham Crown Court.

CCTV Footage Reveals Brutal Assault

Officers were called to reports of disorder outside a pub on High Street in Erdington on July 2 last year, where a man had been injured by a glass bottle. An investigation was launched, and police began trawling CCTV footage to establish exactly what had happened and identify those responsible.

Thanks to their knowledge of the local community, officers were able to identify Omar Clarke and Herbert Palmer on the footage. The CCTV showed the victim seemingly trying to calm down an argument between Clarke and a woman, after which Clarke pushed the man and hit him with a glass bottle. Palmer, who was nearby, then joined the attack.

Sentencing and Police Response

The pair were tracked down, arrested, and have now been sentenced. At Birmingham Crown Court on Thursday, March 26, Clarke was jailed for four years. Clarke, aged 35, of Beech Dean Grove, had previously pleaded guilty to section 18 grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

Palmer, aged 59, of Parkhouse Drive, pleaded guilty to section 20 grievous bodily harm and was given a 16-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months. Detective Constable Amelia Rose, from West Midlands Police's Operation Fearless, stated: “Clarke has rightly been sent to prison for what was a serious violent assault. Both he and Palmer have been held accountable for their actions and the impact they’ve had on the victim.”

Operation Fearless and Community Safety

Operation Fearless was launched in Erdington in 2025, tackling crimes including knife offences, burglary, theft, anti-social behaviour, and drug-related offences. Patrols are now being stepped up in the area. Detective Inspector Tom Lyons explained: “We have been clear that while we expanded to other parts of the West Midlands, we would keep up the pressure on criminals in Erdington, as we are resolute in our aim of tackling issues that were reported to us when we launched.”

He added: “Those living and working in Erdington will notice our officers on patrol more frequently over the next few weeks, using their skills and specialist local knowledge to tackle offending head-on. As ever, we are grateful to the Erdington community for their feedback and information, and we look forward to hearing from people as we continue our work.”

Since its launch, officers on the team have made more than 300 arrests and carried out over 500 stop and searches to keep the community safe in Erdington, demonstrating a continued commitment to reducing crime and enhancing public safety in the area.
