Five years after Kevin Lomas was found stabbed to death in his Birmingham home, the case remains one of the city's most frustrating unsolved murders. Despite fresh CCTV appeals and a £20,000 reward, detectives have been unable to charge anyone for the killing of the 56-year-old, described by his family as a 'kind soul' who always lifted others.
The Final Known Movements
Kevin Lomas was last seen on CCTV footage captured days before his body was discovered. The footage shows him walking along the street, appearing to glance up the road and looking at a parked car as he passes. There is nothing outwardly suspicious about his behaviour. He then pulls up the hood of his coat and later returns, his pace slightly increased. This footage, released three years into the investigation, represents the last known moments of the victim before he was killed.
The multiple-occupancy property on Stratford Road, Hall Green, became a crime scene on April 2, 2021, when Kevin was found dead from a single stab wound. Despite extensive forensic and CCTV work, detectives have been left frustrated and without a breakthrough.
Arrests and Released Suspects
In the early stages of the investigation, a man and a woman were arrested in connection with the murder. However, both were subsequently released without charge. The lack of sufficient evidence has hindered progress, and the case file remains open.
Detectives from West Midlands Police have appealed multiple times for public assistance. In 2024, Detective Chief Inspector Laura Harrison stated: “Three years have now passed and sadly we have not been able to get Kevin’s family the answers they deserve. We’ve carried out lots of enquiries in the area, including CCTV, witness and forensic work, but sadly we’ve not been able to gather enough evidence to charge anyone with Kevin’s murder.”
Family's Tribute
Kevin's family issued a heartfelt tribute earlier in the investigation, describing the void his death has left. They said: “You’re the missing link in our family. Considering you were quite shy when you were young you embodied everything in life that was bright. If anyone felt low, Kevin would lift you. If you needed help Kev would give you a helping hand. He just wanted everyone to be happy and enjoy life as he wanted to do so himself. Tragically this was taken from him. Our poor brother.”
Continued Appeal
As the fifth anniversary of the murder approaches, police are urging anyone with information to come forward. The £20,000 reward offered by Crimestoppers remains available for information leading to a conviction. Detective Chief Inspector Harrison added: “Now that some time has lapsed, I’m hoping there are people who know who is responsible for this and they realise now is the time to do the right thing and come forward.”
