Walsall Raids Seize £5k in Illegal Cigarettes

Walsall Council and West Midlands Police conducted surprise overnight raids at seven 24/7 shops in the borough, seizing a haul of illegal cigarettes and other illicit products with an estimated street value of £5,000.

Raids Yield Significant Seizures

The operation, carried out late on Friday, July 3, and early on Saturday, July 4, targeted businesses suspected of selling illegal tobacco. Officers confiscated illicit products from four of the seven shops visited. In total, nearly 5,000 illegal cigarettes, 2.4kg of illegal hand-rolling tobacco, 18 banned disposable vapes, 36 snuff pouches, and 24 unsafe toys were seized.

Operation Moonlight: Catching Offenders Off Guard

The raids, part of Operation Moonlight, were deliberately scheduled during the early hours to catch offending businesses unawares. Councillor Ian Benton, Portfolio Holder for Street Scene and Enforcement, said: "Those involved in selling illegal tobacco and other unsafe products should know that we will take action whenever and wherever intelligence leads us. Operation Moonlight was deliberately carried out during the early hours to catch offending businesses off guard, proving that enforcement doesn't stop when most people are asleep. Night or day, we'll take illegal goods away."

Impact on Community and Public Health

The council highlighted the broader consequences of illegal tobacco sales. A Walsall Council spokesperson stated: "Illegal tobacco is unregulated and may contain significantly higher levels of harmful substances than legal products. The sale of cheap illicit tobacco also undermines public health by making smoking more affordable and accessible, particularly to young people." Illegal tobacco is frequently linked to organised crime and exploitation, while undermining legitimate businesses and public health campaigns aimed at reducing smoking.

Ongoing Enforcement

The seized goods are part of ongoing investigations. The council confirmed that further enforcement activity will continue across the borough. Councillor Benton thanked Trading Standards officers, West Midlands Police, and the specialist tobacco dog team for their excellent work in the operation.
