West Midlands Fire Service has issued a stark safety warning after an electric car went up in flames in a Birmingham high street. Fire crews battled the car blaze next to an electric charging point in Kings Heath High Street shortly before 8pm on Monday, June 1.
Investigation Reveals Cause
Investigators confirmed that the Nissan's lithium battery had caught fire. While no injuries were reported, the fire service said the incident could have been extremely dangerous.
"Our warning comes after a battery in an electric car caught fire on Kings Heath High Street this week," the service stated. "This incident is a reminder to never, ever tackle fires affecting lithium-ion batteries yourself. These fires are extremely dangerous, burn at incredibly hot temperatures and produce toxic, flammable gases. Lithium-ion batteries can fail quickly and unpredictably."
Emergency Response
Fire crews responded promptly and safely resolved the situation. Fortunately, there were no casualties or injuries, thanks to the work from WMFS crews.
"If you see a vehicle fire, electric or otherwise, or any fire involving a lithium-ion battery, move away and keep well back until emergency services arrive. Never tackle the fire yourself," the service added.
More information about lithium-ion batteries, and how to store, charge and dispose of them safely, can be found on the West Midlands Fire Service website.
