Urgent Alert: 'Cleaning Superstore' WhatsApp Scam Spreading Across the UK

A critical warning has been issued regarding a sophisticated new scam circulating on WhatsApp, which impersonates the United Arab Emirates-based company Cleaning Superstore. Cyber criminals are exploiting this verified business account to send deceptive 'missed delivery' text messages to unsuspecting UK residents.

How the Scam Operates

The fraudulent messages typically read: "PRCL/GB Sorry we missed you today! Our delivery driver, John attempted to reach you but failed to do so. Visit [phishing link] to redeliver." These texts appear to originate from a legitimate, verified business account, significantly increasing their credibility and tricking recipients into trusting them.

According to Lisa Webb, a lawyer at the consumer advocacy group Which?, criminals have likely hacked a genuine account to launch this attack. "Because the messages appear to come from a verified legitimate business account, recipients are probably going to be more likely to trust the message than one that is not verified or just from a random number," Webb explains.

Malware Threat and Risks

The scam SMS messages contain links that direct users to what seem to be official delivery or parcel-tracking applications. However, these are actually malicious software programs designed to infiltrate devices. Once installed, this malware can:

  • Steal sensitive banking information, passwords, and personal data
  • Access your contact list to send scam messages to your connections, facilitating global spread
  • Expose you to future fraud risks, even if no immediate financial loss occurs

Webb emphasizes the importance of vigilance: "Monitor [the account] for any suspicious activity. Banks can put a [mark] against your account so that suspicious activity is flagged, almost as if they’re keeping an eye out for it for you."

Safety Recommendations

To protect yourself from this and similar scams, experts advise:

  1. Avoid clicking on links in unsolicited delivery messages, even if you are expecting a parcel
  2. Use the official websites of delivery companies to track packages securely
  3. Report any suspicious messages immediately to help authorities combat the scam

This scam is specifically engineered to harvest personal and financial information, making it essential to remain cautious and proactive in reporting any suspicious communications.
