A woman has been taken into custody by police following a devastating house fire in Wolverhampton that claimed the lives of two young boys. The fire broke out at a property on Mason Street in the Blakenhall area of the city at approximately 8:30 PM on Friday, April 24. The boys, aged one and three, tragically died at the scene.
In an update on Saturday, April 25, West Midlands Police confirmed that a woman in her 30s has been arrested on suspicion of causing or allowing the death of two children. She remains in police custody as of this afternoon. The family of the boys is being supported by specially trained officers.
A cordon remains in place around the property while investigations into the cause of the fire continue, carried out jointly by West Midlands Fire Service and West Midlands Police.
A police spokesperson stated: "Officers are continuing door-to-door enquiries and are retrieving and reviewing CCTV footage from the area. The cordon at the scene is likely to remain in place for some time, and we thank local residents for their understanding."
Detective Chief Inspector Kylie Westlake, from the public protection unit, added: "This is a truly tragic incident, and our thoughts remain very much with those who loved the children who have been lost. We understand the shock and distress this awful incident will have caused to many people, and we are working at pace to ascertain exactly what has happened. Officers have arrested a woman on suspicion of causing or allowing the death of two children. While we ask people not to speculate about this or the wider incident, we urge anyone who can help with our enquiries and has not yet spoken to us to get in contact."
