Tragedy on Wentworth Road

A pensioner has tragically lost her life following a hit-and-run incident in the Harborne area of Birmingham.

The woman, who was in her 70s, was walking along Wentworth Road when she was struck by a car at approximately 10:15pm on Tuesday, November 4.

The vehicle involved failed to stop at the scene, fleeing after the collision which left the pedestrian with critical injuries.

Police Investigation and Arrest

West Midlands Police confirmed the woman subsequently died from her injuries.

In a official statement, the force expressed that their thoughts were with her family during this profoundly difficult time.

Officers have arrested a 39-year-old man on suspicion of multiple offences, including:

  • Causing serious injury by dangerous driving
  • Possession of a knife
  • Possession of class A drugs

The suspect has been released on bail pending further police enquiries.

Community Reaction and Road Safety Calls

Edgbaston MP Preet Gill responded to the news on social media platform X on November 17, stating she was "deeply saddened" to learn of the resident's death.

She extended her thoughts to the woman's family, acknowledging their "unbearably difficult time."

This tragic event has intensified existing concerns about road safety in the region.

Earlier in November, road safety campaigners had already called for urgent action to prevent further deaths on Birmingham's roads.

Mat MacDonald, the Regional Road Safety Commissioner, is supporting a coalition of 16 local organisations pushing for ten specific changes to improve safety.

This renewed demand for action followed an emotional service marking the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, where families shared tributes and advocated for measures to prevent avoidable deaths and serious injuries.
