Woman rescued after medical episode causes Great Bridge crash

A woman had to be freed from her vehicle by firefighters after she suffered a suspected medical episode at the wheel and crashed into railings in Great Bridge on Sunday afternoon.

Emergency response to Black Country New Road

Emergency services were called to the Black Country New Road, near the Navigation Roundabout, at around 4.16pm on July 12. The driver, a woman, is believed to have experienced a medical incident while driving, causing her car to collide with roadside railings.

West Midlands Fire Service dispatched two fire engines to the scene, with the first crew arriving within four minutes. Firefighters used small tools to free the woman from the damaged vehicle.

Injuries and hospital treatment

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "On arrival, crews found a woman, who is thought to have suffered a medical episode at the wheel. Crews treated her for injuries not believed to be serious and conveyed her to Midland Metropolitan University Hospital."

The woman was taken to Midland Metropolitan University Hospital for further treatment. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Police and traffic management

Police officers also attended the scene to assist with traffic management and vehicle recovery. The incident was cleared by 5.23pm, according to West Midlands Fire Service.

A fire service spokesperson added: "This was a collision between a car and a road railing. Firefighters helped free one casualty from the vehicle using small tools, who is believed to have been conveyed to Midlands Met Hospital by paramedics for further treatment. Police colleagues were also in attendance, supporting with traffic management and vehicle recovery. We left this incident at 5.23pm."
