Woman Breaks Decades of Silence Over Horrific Train Station Rape
A woman who was brutally raped twice at a Midlands train station nearly forty years ago has courageously come forward to report the crime, prompting a major police investigation. The victim, now in her fifties and living abroad, was just sixteen years old when the horrific sexual assault occurred in December 1987 at Newark Northgate railway station.
Chilling Details of the 1987 Attack Emerge
The woman was traveling from Stevenage towards Doncaster to visit relatives in Hull when her journey was disrupted. Due to heavy snowfall in northern regions, all passengers were ordered to disembark at Newark Northgate station, where announcements indicated a two-hour delay for the next service.
While standing alone on the platform, a group of approximately six young men approached her. One of the men, referred to by police as Man 2, complained about the delay before suggesting the woman accompany them to a nearby pub for safety. Feeling vulnerable on the deserted platform, she reluctantly agreed.
Pub Encounter and Subsequent Blackout
At the pub, Man 2 became talkative and revealed that he and his companions were soldiers serving in the British Army. He purchased the victim a Coca-Cola, which she later recalled had an unusual taste, and promptly bought her another drink. Shortly after consuming the beverages, the woman blacked out completely.
Her next memory was being back at Newark Northgate station, with her feet dragging along the ground as the men supported her along the platform. She described lifting her head and noticing several other passengers looking in her direction with apparent concern.
Brutal Assault on Railway Tracks
The men then took her down the platform and lowered her onto the railway tracks. While the group jeered and shouted, another man from the group, identified as Man 1, raped her on the tracks. After this initial assault, Man 2 pulled her back up onto the platform.
The ordeal continued when she was forced back onto the train, crammed between the men in the vestibule area. She was then pushed into a toilet compartment where Man 1 raped her for a second time.
Desperate Escape at Doncaster Station
When the train eventually arrived at Doncaster station, Man 2 insisted the victim remain with the group. Seizing a fleeting opportunity, she told him she needed to check the timetable for her connection to Hull. Spotting her train, she quickly boarded and sat among numerous other passengers to conceal herself.
Looking out the window, she saw Man 2 frantically searching the platform for her. Another passenger sitting opposite noticed both her distress and the man on the platform. As the train departed Doncaster, she finally escaped her attackers.
Police Launch Public Appeal for Information
Detective Superintendent Sam Blackburn of British Transport Police has made a public appeal for information on Crimewatch Live. The investigation was launched after the victim came forward in September 2025 to report the crime that has haunted her for most of her life.
"This courageous woman has lived with this ordeal for most of her life, and we are doing everything we possibly can to try to achieve justice for her," DS Blackburn stated. "Living abroad and the passage of time is not a barrier to justice."
Key Details About the Suspects
According to the victim's account, the attackers all had distinctive crew cut hairstyles and carried canvas bags. They claimed to be members of the British Army at the time of the assault. Police believe there were around six men in total, including both Man 1 and Man 2.
"From the victim's report there were many people who saw what happened to her at Newark Northgate station that Friday night, and I would be keen to hear from those people," DS Blackburn emphasized. "Even more important, though, is that her attacker and his group claimed to be members of the British Army."
Appeal to Witnesses and Conscience
The detective made a direct appeal to anyone who might have witnessed the events or heard about them through military networks: "Some stood and watched, and no one at all intervened. The victim was only a child. Were you there? Has this been on your conscience for all these years? Can you do the right thing now and come forward with what you know?"
He continued: "Alternatively, were you in the British Army at the time and did you hear about this incident through the grapevine? Do you know the men responsible, and can you tell us their names? Any fragment of information, no matter how small, can help us."
How to Provide Information
British Transport Police are urging anyone with information to come forward immediately. Witnesses can contact police directly online, text BTP on 61016, or call 0800 40 50 40, using reference number 2500106894. All information will be treated with strict confidentiality.
