Worcester Residents Outraged as '6-7' Vandalism Targets Dozens of Cars
Furious residents in Worcester have condemned a spate of mindless vandalism that has left them facing hefty repair bills, with schoolchildren allegedly behind a '6-7' etching craze targeting vehicles. Over the past three weeks, dozens of cars parked on Sebright Avenue and Arundel Drive have been scratched with the digits, causing significant damage and financial strain for locals.
Community Left Hundreds of Pounds Out of Pocket
Pensioners Mark and Heather Stewart, both 69, were among those affected, discovering '6-7' scratched into the side of their vehicle last week. Mark expressed his frustration, stating, "There have been dozens of vehicles targeted. It happened at least ten times in one week. Residents are angry. It's mindless vandalism to nobody's benefit. It's going to cost people a lot of money to get it repaired." The incidents have resulted in bills running into hundreds of pounds for many, as the scratches mar car doors and bonnets.
Locals Blame Schoolchildren for Anti-Social 'Game'
Residents believe a group of schoolchildren is responsible, turning the vandalism into a game. One local commented, "We think it's a group of kids who think it's a game to see how many cars they can scratch in one go. I wouldn't be surprised to see videos appearing on TikTok showing the little hoodlums laughing like hyenas whilst making our lives a misery." Another added, "I have kids and I know all about the 6-7 craze, it's nothing new, every generation had something like this. My issue is when it goes beyond a bit of fun and becomes an excuse for anti-social behaviour."
Community Takes Action with Posters and School Outreach
In response, the community is mobilizing to address the issue. One resident has produced a poster to raise awareness, and local schools have been informed, with reports indicating they have been very supportive. "We're going to get the poster printed and put it up on the street," said a local. "The most common thing is '67' but there has been other scratches as well. We would hope we won't need security cameras and all the rest of it. I think some people have got Ring Doorbells. It's a really supportive community. We are trying to take action ourselves."
Police Investigate Criminal Damage Incident
West Mercia Police have confirmed they are investigating the vandalism. A spokesperson stated, "A criminal damage incident was reported to us around 11.15am on March 5 after a car was damaged on Sebright Avenue. The incident is now waiting allocation for further enquiries." The '6-7' phenomenon, which has recently gained attention as a cultural craze, is now causing real-world distress in Worcester, highlighting the impact of such trends on community safety and well-being.
