Guildford Cathedral Musicians to Trek 800km for Music Fundraising

Two dedicated musicians from Guildford Cathedral are preparing for an extraordinary 800km pilgrimage across France and Spain, set to begin immediately after the Cathedral's Holy Week and Easter services. This major fundraising challenge aims to support both church and school music initiatives, highlighting the vital role of music in community and education.

The Pilgrimage Journey and Its Purpose

Asher Oliver, the Sub-Organist of Guildford Cathedral, and Fraser Ellson, a Lay Clerk and Choral Director for the Catholic Diocese of Arundel and Brighton in Surrey, will depart on Easter Monday. They will travel as Team Guildford Cathedral, embarking on the Camino Francés route from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in the French Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostela on Spain's Atlantic coast. The duo plans to complete this demanding journey in just under three weeks, mixing walking and cycling to cover the distance efficiently.

At the core of this challenge is Asher's fundraising effort for Guildford Cathedral music, which seeks to sustain the choir and organist traditions that have enriched worship and community life for generations. Fraser is also raising funds through the pilgrimage to support music provision in nine state primary schools across Southern England, where his singing program has already impacted approximately 1,600 children.

Timing and Personal Commitment

This pilgrimage follows one of the busiest periods in the Cathedral's calendar, with both musicians participating fully in Holy Week and Easter services before setting off at dawn the next day. All costs associated with the trip are being covered personally by Asher and Fraser, ensuring that every donation goes directly to their causes.

Asher Oliver commented, "After the busyness and intensity of Holy Week and Easter at the Cathedral, setting off at the crack of dawn on Easter Monday will probably feel pretty abrupt. We are however on something of a deadline and so need to crack on! Music is such an important part of daily life at the Cathedral, and I am really pleased to be raising funds to help sustain it for the future."

The Impact of Cathedral Music

Guildford Cathedral Choir plays a central role in the Cathedral's worshipping life, performing regularly throughout the week and at key services. Alongside the organ tradition, it contributes significantly to the Cathedral's daily witness, ministry, and public engagement. Beyond worship, the music program offers young people valuable educational opportunities, fostering skills like discipline, teamwork, confidence, and excellence.

Fraser Ellson added, "Music has the power to shape lives, whether that is in cathedral worship, parish life or in the classroom. It is very special to be doing this together, as friends, colleagues and musicians, and to be raising money for two causes that are both so close to our hearts."

Support from Cathedral Leadership

The Very Reverend Bob Cooper, Dean of Guildford, has expressed full support for the challenge. "Asher and Fraser are two outstanding musicians who give so much to the life of this Cathedral," said the Dean. "To head straight from the intensity of Holy Week and Easter into an 800km pilgrimage across France and Spain is a quite remarkable commitment — and entirely typical of their dedication and spirit." He also shared personal insights, having walked the Camino himself, describing it as demanding, beautiful, and transformative.

Dean Bob encouraged all who value church and school music to support the fundraising efforts. To meet their three-week deadline, Asher and Fraser will need to average about 30km per day on foot or 70km per day by bike, showcasing their determination and passion for music education and preservation.
