Melton Mowbray is set to host Leicestershire's only Battle of Britain Parade next month, an annual event that commemorates the courage and sacrifice of Second World War heroes. The town is inviting residents to line the streets and show support for serving personnel, veterans, and young participants.
Event details and schedule
The parade will take place on September 20, starting at Chapel Street Car Park and proceeding to Egerton Lodge Memorial Gardens. The event is free to attend and will feature a special flypast, subject to weather conditions, before the parade moves through the town.
Spectators can expect to see a contingent of RAF personnel from the Defence Animal Training Regiment, alongside local veterans and Air Cadets. The parade will conclude at Egerton Lodge Memorial Gardens with an outdoor service of remembrance and a wreath-laying ceremony.
Community significance and call to attend
Toby Burton, Chairperson of Melton Mowbray RAF Association, emphasised the importance of the event. "The Battle of Britain remains one of the most significant moments in our nation's history," he said. "This parade is an opportunity for our community to come together to remember those who served with such courage and determination, while also recognising today's serving personnel, veterans and the next generation represented by our Air Cadets."
Burton added, "We are proud that Melton continues to host Leicestershire's only Battle of Britain Parade, and we would love to see as many people as possible lining the streets and joining us for the service. Your presence helps ensure that the sacrifices made by 'The Few' are never forgotten."
Practical information for attendees
Organisers are encouraging families, visitors, and people across the region to gather along the route to preserve this important tradition. The morning's events are expected to conclude around midday following the commemorative service.
The parade is free to attend, and no tickets are required. Residents and visitors are advised to arrive early to secure a good viewing spot along the route from Chapel Street Car Park to Egerton Lodge Memorial Gardens.
