Armed Gold Thief Jailed for 14 Years

Mohammed Ruman Khan, 22, from Newcastle, has been sentenced to 13 years and 10 months in prison for an armed gold robbery that terrorised a family in Alum Rock, Birmingham. Khan knocked on the front door of the victim's home before forcing his way in and threatening the occupants with a knife.

During the incident in April 2026, a woman was injured in a scuffle as Khan stole gold, clothes, and perfume. Two relatives of the woman attempted to retrieve the stolen items but were threatened with the weapon as Khan escaped, according to West Midlands Police.

Quick Thinking Leads to Arrest

The victims managed to take a photograph of Khan as he fled, which proved crucial in the police investigation. Khan was tracked to Northumbria, where he was arrested. He later pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary in Birmingham, as well as other offences in the north of England.

Police Praise Victims and Colleagues

Detective Sergeant Adam Charlesworth, from the Birmingham Neighbourhood Crime Team, commented after the sentencing: "We are pleased with the sentence given to Khan, clearly a dangerous offender who wasn’t afraid to use violence to steal for his own personal gain."

"The people he stole from in Birmingham were brave in confronting him and trying to stop the theft, and their quick thinking in getting a photo helped us bring him to justice. We are also grateful to our colleagues in Northumbria for their help with this investigation, and their cooperation and professionalism in helping us bring Khan to justice, as they too were investigating him."

Impact on the Community

The incident has left the local community in Alum Rock shaken. The stolen gold, which was worth thousands of pounds, has not been recovered. The case highlights the dangers posed by armed criminals who target residential properties. West Midlands Police have reiterated their commitment to tackling such violent offences and bringing perpetrators to justice.
