Birmingham Grandmother's 'Living Hell' as Rat Carcasses Leak Through Ceiling

A Birmingham grandmother has described her daily existence as a 'living hell' due to a severe rat infestation that has persisted for over three years, with decomposing carcasses now leaking through the ceiling of her council bungalow.

Carole Parton, 62, has been battling this pest problem at her Manston Road property in Sheldon since 2022, claiming that Birmingham City Council has failed to resolve the issue despite multiple visits from pest control teams.

"This is living in hell and nobody is helping us," said Mrs Parton, who resides in the one-bedroom council bungalow with her husband Robert, 67.

Health Impacts and Disease Concerns

The infestation has severely affected the couple's health, with Mrs Parton believing she contracted Weil's disease after fluids from decomposing rats seeped through her ceiling during the pandemic. She experienced symptoms including grey skin and purple lips before receiving treatment from her GP.

Rats have invaded every part of the property, including the loft, wall cavities, kitchen, and bathroom. One council worker reportedly told her they had 'never seen so many rat holes underneath a property'.

Council Response and Housing Priority

Both Mrs Parton and her husband suffer from serious health conditions. She has bronchitis, COPD, and asthma, while he has Alzheimer's disease, heart stents, and chronic angina.

Birmingham City Council stated they have carried out recent treatment and preventative works, sealing entry points, and confirmed the household is in Band A, the highest priority for rehousing.

The council's actions include ongoing pest control measures and monitoring the situation to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents.
