The future of The Vine Inn, a cherished Birmingham pub known as a 'hidden gem', hangs in the balance as the £2.2 billion Ladywood regeneration scheme progresses. Publican Demi Devine has expressed uncertainty over whether the historic establishment will survive the ambitious redevelopment plans.
Regeneration Project Details
The 20-year project, a partnership between Birmingham City Council and Berkeley Group, could see up to 70 per cent of existing homes in Ladywood refurbished or replaced. Planning approval is anticipated this year, with construction potentially starting in 2028.
Publican's Concerns
Devine described The Vine Inn, located on Ruston Street, as a 'hidden gem pub which is off the beaten track' that has served the community since 1857. She said: 'It's my livelihood and it's where I live, it's everything rolled into one.' The pub faces the threat of demolition as part of the controversial regeneration.
Community Response
Concerns about gentrification have prompted local campaigners to erect signs outside the pub calling to 'protect the future of Ladywood from gentrification' and 'save local pubs'. Berkeley Group acknowledged the uncertainty, stating: 'Regeneration projects of this scale take time, and we understand that this can feel unsettling for businesses and residents alike.'
