Quinton Residents Furious Over Green Space Sale Plans

Community Rallies to Save Sir Richard's Drive Green Space from Auction

Locals in Quinton have expressed deep anger and emotional distress over the Calthorpe Estate's decision to auction off a beloved recreation area known as Sir Richard's Drive green space. The tree-lined park, often called an 'oasis of calm', is set to go under the hammer in September as part of a broader plan to sell 200 plots over the next few years.

The green space is a central feature of the community, used by walkers, joggers, community groups, and pupils from Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Primary School. It is dotted with large oak, sycamore, fir, ash, and willow trees, providing a tranquil environment for various activities.

Residents Voice Fears and Emotional Attachment

Roger Chester, 75, who lives near the green, said: "This is the lungs of the area. This is the equivalent of a private gated estate in London. Kids play football and cricket." Sally Newton, 67, who litter picks in the area, added: "Our two boys have grown up here and been sledging and built snowmen. People do tai chi and meditate. It's a huge benefit for our overall wellness." Her husband Mark, 67, said: "It's an oasis of calm, people from the wider neighbourhood come here. You can hear tawny owls, bats and woodpeckers." Clare Saundercock, 79, said: "I can't bear the thought of losing it, people are getting really emotional."

Local Councillors and MP Support Residents' Fight

Councillor Sam Forsyth said: "This is an amenity for people who have lived here for years and years. Lots of people come here because it is clean, safe and quiet." Councillor Dr Nagu Penakacherla is circulating a petition against the sale. MP Preet Gill said: "Residents living around Sir Richard's Drive and Fugelmere Close have been clear that they want to see this valued green space protected, and I share that ambition. I have already secured an agreement from Calthorpe Estates that the community will have the first opportunity to buy the land before it goes to auction."

Community Meeting Scheduled to Discuss Saving the Space

Locals will gather on July 15 at 6pm on the green to discuss ways to save the precious space. MP Preet Gill added: "My focus now is bringing residents together, alongside Calthorpe Estates, to see whether we can deliver another successful community purchase. I have done it before, with residents on Hampshire drive and I am determined to give local people every opportunity to protect this green space for future generations."

Calthorpe Estate Defends Sale Process

The Calthorpe Estate said: "Calthorpe Estates is a long-term property investor and developer. It has been involved in the development and evolution of the Edgbaston area for over 300 years. Following recent legislative changes, Calthorpe Estates has reviewed its land ownership model and after careful consideration has decided to sell certain areas of land in residential areas." The estate stated that the land has already been offered to local residents to buy before auction, and that a trial auction saw all 7 lots sold to residents. They emphasised a commitment to keeping residents informed and ensuring Edgbaston remains vibrant.
