Solihull Council's planning committee has unanimously approved a further extension for a property on Widney Lane that residents have branded an 'eyesore', raising fears it could become a House in Multiple Occupation (HMO).
Approved Plans and Existing Extensions
The planning committee granted permission on June 17 for a single-storey side, rear and front extension, a garage conversion, and a rear outbuilding intended as a gym at the semi-detached house. The property already features a loft extension and a single-storey extension built under permitted development rights, which locals say clash with the street's distinct style and brickwork.
Resident Concerns Over Development
One resident told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: "We think it is overdevelopment. It's an eyesore and now they want to extend it further." Neighbours also worried about potential rain runoff into adjoining gardens and the nearby Cranmore Infant School. A long-term resident noted: "We are losing gardens, grass areas, there are no soakaways round here."
Fears of Conversion to HMO
Some residents fear the approved gym could later become a bedroom, potentially turning the property into an HMO. One neighbour stated: "What worries me, the gym in the garden, how long before that becomes a bedroom? It could become a house in multiple occupancy." Despite these concerns, the applicant made no comment during the public speaking section of the meeting.
Community Impact
The unanimous approval has left residents frustrated, with many feeling the extensions represent overdevelopment that undermines the character of the neighbourhood. The council's decision allows further alterations to a property already criticized for its appearance and potential future use.
