Birmingham mum Sarah Ventre has launched Bangers N' Mashup CIC, a community interest company that hosts family-friendly raves to raise money for families struggling with food poverty across Birmingham and Sandwell. The unique events feature old school bangers from the nineties and noughties, complete with glitter tattoos, face paint, and free fruit sundae stations for children. All ages are welcome at these daytime raves, which Sarah describes as "family-orientated for grannies, aunts and uncles."
From Food Deliveries to Rave Fundraisers
Sarah, from Kings Norton, began her mission during the Covid-19 pandemic when she delivered food to thousands of families after the government voted against free school meals. "Originally, it was just about feeding people," she explained, but soon realised "this was more than just a Covid thing, it's a systemic, deep-rooted issue."
Partnerships and Workshops
The charity now partners with Aston Villa Foundation and community centres to run workshops teaching economical cooking to families in temporary housing. They have donated communal air fryers and provide cooking lessons, particularly helping those with limited kitchen access. The organisation also supports young care leavers with basic life skills, including teaching one person how to use a tin opener.
"We're often interacting with families at their lowest point and the feedback they give us is that we're making their lives a lot easier," Sarah said.
Upcoming Events
Upcoming events include May 31 at Rowheath Pavilion in Bournville, July 19 at Alfred Works, and seasonal raves planned for August, Halloween, and Christmas. The charity also hosts mini raves directly in temporary accommodation where families can dance and eat together.
"It's all about the little wins," Sarah added, "and it's about giving hope, that's what we cling onto each day."
