Birmingham Library Illuminated in Green for Ramadan 2026 Commencement

As the city of Birmingham prepares for the cherished tradition of Ramadan in 2026, the Library of Birmingham is set to be illuminated in green tonight, on February 17, to mark the beginning of this significant period. Ramadan in the UK will officially start at sunset on Tuesday, February 17, with the first day of fasting observed on Wednesday, February 18.

Understanding Ramadan and Its Significance in Birmingham

Ramadan is a holy month observed by Muslims worldwide, characterized by fasting, prayer, and acts of charity from dawn until sunset. During this time, most adult Muslims abstain from food and drink, with some exceptions. In Birmingham, Muslims can expect to fast for approximately 12 to 13 hours each day throughout the month. Although this may seem lengthy, the fasting period is notably shorter compared to previous years with longer summer days.

According to the latest census data, 29.9% of Birmingham's population identifies as Muslim, highlighting the importance of this tradition in the city's cultural fabric.

Ramadan Streets Festival Returns for Its Second Year

Building on the success of its inaugural run in 2025, the Ramadan Streets festival is returning to Birmingham for 2026. This event extends a warm invitation to people of all backgrounds to come together for a five-day immersive cultural and artistic night market. It celebrates the spirit, community, and shared experiences of Ramadan, fostering inclusivity and understanding.

The festival will take place from Wednesday, March 4, to Sunday, March 8, 2026, running daily from dusk until 11:30 PM. It will be held in an open-air setting on Coventry Road, Birmingham, at the grounds of Birmingham City Football Club. Following its previous success, which attracted nearly 30,000 attendees, this year's event is supported by the Birmingham City Football Club Foundation, ensuring a vibrant and engaging experience for all.

The Library of Birmingham, located on Centenary Square, Broad Street, Birmingham, B1 2ND, serves as a beacon of this celebration, with its green illumination symbolizing the start of Ramadan and the city's commitment to honoring this tradition.
