Construction has commenced on one of three children's play areas in Essex Country Parks, following a significant investment by Essex County Council. The council has allocated £335,000 from its capital programme to enhance these popular recreational spaces, with work already underway at Hadleigh Country Park and plans for Great Notley Country Park and Belhus Woods Country Park.
Major Upgrade for Play Trails and Equipment
In collaboration with Kompan UK, a leading playground equipment supplier, the investment will see the beloved play trail at Great Notley Country Park receive a comprehensive upgrade. From spring 2026, visitors can expect new and improved play equipment designed to enrich the outdoor experience for children and families.
New Features to Include:
- A play pit for imaginative exploration
- A climbing forest to challenge physical abilities
- Sensory equipment to stimulate cognitive development
- An agility trail for coordination and fitness
- A 12-metre rope bridge for adventurous play
The funding also covers essential safety and surfacing enhancements at Hadleigh Country Park, where construction has already begun, and at Belhus Woods Country Park. These improvements aim to create safer, more engaging environments that meet modern standards.
Benefits for Children's Development and Wellbeing
The upgraded play areas are specifically designed to foster children's imaginative play, enhance communication skills, strengthen muscles and coordination, and help burn off energy in a healthy, active way. Outdoor play is recognised as crucial for holistic child development, offering both physical and mental health advantages.
Councillor Mark Durham, cabinet member for the arts, heritage and culture at Essex County Council, emphasised the importance of this investment. "We are delighted to be able to invest in the play areas at these much-loved country parks, which every year provide young families with an affordable day out. Outdoor play itself is vital for children's wellbeing," he stated.
"It provides physical health benefits like improved fitness and stronger immune systems as well as mental health benefits, including better mood, social skills, resilience and natural world connections. We hope more children continue to enjoy the outdoor play at Essex Country Parks in the future," added Councillor Durham.
Temporary Closures and Diversions
While the improvements are underway, visitors should be aware that closures and diversions will be in place at the three country parks. These measures are necessary to ensure safety during construction and to facilitate the timely completion of the projects. Park users are advised to check for updates before planning their visits to avoid any inconvenience.
This initiative reflects Essex County Council's commitment to enhancing community facilities and promoting active, healthy lifestyles for children across the region. By investing in these play areas, the council aims to support families in accessing quality outdoor recreation that contributes to long-term wellbeing and community cohesion.
