Free Room on the Broom Trail Opens Near Birmingham

A brand new interactive trail based on the beloved children's book Room on the Broom has officially opened at Forestry England's Wyre Forest site near Kidderminster, providing families with a magical free day out just an hour from Birmingham.

Magical Adventure in the Woods

The trail, which launched on Tuesday 27th January 2026, brings Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler's much-loved story to life through an immersive woodland experience. Children are invited to help Witch find her lost possessions including her hat, bow and wand while collecting magical ingredients to complete her spell along the way.

Celebrating 25 Years of Storytelling

This special installation marks the 25th anniversary of the original Room on the Broom publication and will remain in place throughout the entire year of 2026, giving families ample opportunity to experience the magical adventure. Each stop along the trail features engaging activities, interesting forest facts and what organisers describe as a sprinkle of woodland magic.

Hamish Wood, Recreation Manager at Wyre Forest, expressed enthusiasm about the new attraction: "We're thrilled to bring the magic of Room on the Broom to Wyre Forest. This trail is a wonderful way for families to connect with nature, enjoy a beloved story, and create unforgettable memories together."

Enhanced Experience Available

While the trail itself is completely free to explore, families can purchase a special Room on the Broom trail pack for £4 to enhance their experience. This pack includes a themed lanyard, magic spell cards, stickers, a pencil and a pop-out craft activity to create a personalised witchy wand.

Continuing a Successful Partnership

The Room on the Broom trail represents the latest collaboration between Forestry England and Magic Light Pictures, continuing a partnership that began in 2014. This successful relationship has previously brought other Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler characters to life in natural settings, including popular Gruffalo and Zog trails that families have enjoyed for years.

Accessibility and Location

The Wyre Forest Visitor Centre is easily accessible from Birmingham city centre, with the journey taking just under an hour via the A456 through Halesowen and Hagley. The forest setting provides an ideal backdrop for this literary adventure, combining outdoor exploration with storytelling magic.

This new attraction offers families an affordable and imaginative day out option, particularly appealing during school holidays and weekends. The combination of free access with optional enhanced elements makes it accessible to families with varying budgets while maintaining the magical atmosphere of the original story.
